The Hy-Vee Poverty Diet ChallengeWhat is the Poverty Diet? The Poverty Diet Challenge is a Student Hunger Drive initiatve designed to expose individuals to the realities of living on food stamps. Particpants are asked to spend no more than $3.43 per day on food and drink for two days. The Poverty Diet Challenge will take place on October 7th & 8th. Why $3.43 per day? USDA Food and Nutrition Services data (as of July 30, 2009) provides thatthe average 2008 Illinois food stamp benefit was $110.19 per person per month. The 2008 Iowa food stamp benefit was $98.66 per person per month. Therefore, in 2008, the average Illinois/Iowa per person per day benefit was $3.43. - Poverty Diet Challenge 2009
